About Kozminski University

Kozminski University is a prestigious private business school based in Warsaw, Poland. Founded in 1993, Kozminski is the first-ranked private university in Poland and is among the top business schools globally (43rd on Financial Times 2018 ranking).

The university holds triple crown international accreditations (EQUIS, AMBA, AACSB). About 8,000 students are enrolled at Kozminski University. For this customer story, we interviewed Valeriia Gorlushko, Head of Examination Centre.

Why?

Initially, the main motivation drivers for introducing e-assessments at Kozminski University were: i) reducing time spend on marking and grading; ii) improving the readability of exam submissions to open-ended questions.

As early as 2014, the university trialled another online assessment tool and realised that the faculty members were highly motivated for proceeding with online exams. The wide range of question types in Inspera Assessment enabled them to scale and to digitise subjects such as Finance and Accounting.

‘When implementing digital exams, we experienced that we could gain higher quality with less time spend. Usually, it is the other way around. Digital exams have basically changed the way we work and have made it much easier to share the responsibilities connected with the assessment process,’ underlines Valeriia Gorlushko.

A question bank (a database of all the available online assessment questions for a subject) supports the examiners’ job of setting questions. The academic staff responded positively to both the functionality and design offered by Inspera Assessment.

In addition, a research and development (R&D) team at Inspera worked closely with the Oxford Medical Sciences Division to advance the learning analytics tools available in the platform.

How?

The contract between Kozminski and Inspera started from September 2017, and involved integration with the local student information system (SIS) and its VLE (Virtual University), which have been the key requirements for optimising the administrative workflow to achieve a more effortless e-assessment ecosystem. The following actions were taken by KU’s project team:

  • Personal training support for teachers
  • Build credibility for e-assessment internally and grow organically – participation is voluntary
  • Planned time for learning the system
  • Organised an Examination Team of 7 people, who provide IT support on the exam day using a dynamic rota calendar

The project team has two full-time members. Valeriia tells about the partnership with Inspera: ‘We work together in an agile way. Inspera gives great training opportunities’.

The results

In fall 2019, Kozminski University delivered 1,354 digital exams with Inspera Assessment with a total number of 28,378 submissions. The numbers will only increase in 2020 with the introduction of three auditoriums suitable for Bring Your Own Device. The students at the university find the online assessment process to be fair with a decreased level of cheating, and they are happy with the reduced time on marking, grading, and feedback.

Several professors at Kozminski University have stated that they only want to do digital exams going forward. The academics can use a wide range of question sets when creating an exam, and they don’t have to deal with handwritten papers. Finally, the administrative staff spend fewer hours on managing and coordinating all exams tasks, and they benefit from a scalable platform with opportunities for BYOD.

Looking ahead

In 2019, Kozminski University invested in three highly modern auditoriums suitable for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) exams and classes. BYOD exams at Kozminski University are here to stay and to be scaled and developed in the future.

‘An exam can be stressful, so we really want our students to be as comfortable as possible. With BYOD, the students can carry out their exam on a personal computer which they are familiar with. It makes them feel more confident about themselves and the exam situation. Eventually, it is likely they will perform better and spend less time on practicalities,’ says Valeriia Gorlushko.
